Top 10 Kids Activities To Do At Home This Easter
With all of the uncertainty around COVID-19, you may find that your Easter plans have been derailed. Perhaps you had a long weekend trip booked that has now been cancelled, or had big plans to get out and about on Easter Sunday.
If you have kids, you’re likely also wondering how they’re going to go with being cooped up indoors without going stir-crazy (and driving you crazy, too!). The good news is, you can still keep them entertained during the Easter break with fun indoors games and activities! Read on for 10 inexpensive kids activities you can do at home this Easter.
1. Have an indoor Easter egg hunt
Even if you’re on strict lockdown, the family can still partake in this Easter tradition. Just turn it into an indoors Easter egg hunt! Whether you simply scatter the eggs throughout the house or turn it into a scavenger hunt, it’s a fun activity you can do as a family without even leaving the house. You can even turn it into an activity race in the hallway (for example, players have to ‘hop like a bunny’ or ‘chirp like a baby chick’ before they move on to find the next egg) to help the littlies burn off some extra energy! All you’ll need is a bag of chocolate eggs.
2. Create Easter crafts
Getting creative with the kids is a great way to keep them entertained for hours, and there’s no shortage of Easter craft projects they can tackle. The good news is, you can do this with just a few simple materials — many of which you probably around have around the house! The kids could make egg carton bunnies, by cutting egg compartments in half, then popping on googly eyes and bunny ears cut out of foam. Or, they could many bunny faces from plastic plates or even cotton balls on pieces of paper. Painting hard-boiled eggs is always a great option too!
3. Bake Easter treats
This is the perfect opportunity to get the kids involved in the kitchen! There are many delicious Easter treats that are easy to make from scratch, from easter egg brownies to bunny cupcakes and Rice Krispie treats. Not only do these only require a couple of ingredients, but they’re also super easy to make. The kids will love putting on their aprons and getting their hands dirty (after hand sanitiser, of course!) in the kitchen. You might even discover that you have a budding Betty Crocker or Jamie Oliver on your hands!
4. Do a science experiment
Any activity that can keep the kids entertained and teach them something new is a winner! There are many different fun DIY science experiments you can do at home, but one that’s great for Easter is the egg drop challenge. Teaching kids the concept of inertia, you place a smooth tray over a plastic cup of water. Then, you put a cardboard tube (such as an empty toilet or cardboard roll) on top of that. Place an uncooked egg horizontally on the tube and strike the tray hard enough to send the tray flying but not hard enough to spill the water. If all goes well, the tray will go flying, but the egg will safely drop into the water!
5. Create Easter cards
The kids might not be able to see some of their favourite relatives or friends this Easter, but that doesn’t mean they can’t pass on their festive wishes. Creating homemade cards is another great Easter craft project that the kids will keep the kids absorbed for ages. All they’ll need is some pieces of paper or cardboard, felt tip pens, coloured pencils and paint and whatever else you can get your hands on, like glitter and pipecleaners. Then, it’s time to channel their inner artists!
6. Play a board game — or create your own!
Board games are always a classic for rainy days — or, days where you just can’t go outdoors! There are many fun board games on the market that are suitable for kids (and adults!) of any age that you can pick up from the department store. But if you and the kids are feeling creative, you could also make your own! It could be as simple as an Easter tic-tac-toe or bingo, or as complex as an egg hunt themed boardgame.
7. Create a laser obstacle course
This is an exciting activity you can do any time of year — and it only requires one material! Inspired by the laser traps seen in spy movies, you’ll turn your hallway into a fun obstacle course for the kids. Just grab some string or crepe paper (preferably red, for maximum drama!) and zig-zag it from one wall to the other throughout the corridor. The kids must then crawl, jump and climb their way over the maze without touching the ‘lasers’.
8. Do an egg and spoon race
This Easter tradition dates back to the 1800s, and makes for an egg-cellent activity for the kids! Pop some eggs on metal spoons, and have your players race individually or relay-style from one side of the room or backyard without dropping their eggs. If you’re doing it indoors, using hard-boiled eggs will help minimise mess.
9. Hold an egg toss
You’re going to want to cover your furniture and pop on some old clothes for this one, because it can get a little messy! Or, if you can do it in your backyard, even better. Split your family into pairs, and get them to stand about one metre apart (great social distancing!) A raw egg is tossed from one partner to the next. The platers who catch the eggs without breaking them continue in the game, while the others are out. After each successful catch, the players take a step backwards so that the tosses are further and further. The last player left with an unbroken egg wins the game.
10. Have a picnic at home
While getting out to the local park or beach might not be an option, there’s no reason you can’t have a fun Easter picnic with the kids. Grab a range of sweet and savoury nibbles, and pop them in your picnic basket. Then, grab your picnic blanket and set it up in the living room, or backyard. You can even grab cushions and throw rugs to make it an even fancier and comfier affair.
By trying one of these 10 indoors kids activities, you can put on an egg-citing Easter without even leaving the house.
